Hawker-ing it out for dinner!
I
couldn't exactly leave this place without trying out a hawker. So for
my last night in Singapore, Pam took me to Makansutra Gluttons Bay.
Right beside the Esplanade and overlooking the bay, Makansutra Gluttons
Bay had to great things going; good food and an amazing view. Mixed with
great company and you get one really awesome dining experience.
Full house!
I
heard the Gluttons bay is more popular to the foreign market which I
did get to experience since majority of the diners during my visit were
Filipino. Hearing Tagalog right and left, I felt like I was back in
Manila haha! So some say that some of the locals actually opt not to go
to Gluttons Bay because the taste is no longer authentic Singapore, but
rather edited to cater to the taste buds of tourists. I guess we'll just
have to see how it caters to my taste buds!
So while Pam went to buy her favorites.. I immediately lined up for Wee Nam Kee!
Since
it did originate from Singapore, I wanted to see how it compared to the
one back home. I was intrigued because while we have a sorta fancy
set-up of a full blown restaurant back in Manila, Wee Nam Kee is really
more popular as hawker staple here in Singapore.
And here it is!
before
we get started on the Chicken, I have to talk about the chicken rice.
From my first spoonful, it already tasted very different from the one
back home which I assume is due to the chicken used here in Singapore.
Now for the Chicken!
Like
I said, Wee Nam Kee Singapore uses a different type of chicken which
they call the Yellow Chicken. Considered the Wagyu of Chickens due to
its fattier properties, the result is the much more tender texture of
the meat as well as a subtle, fattier flavor which doe make the chicken,
as well as the broth and chicken rice much more flavorful compared to
the one back home. What I really liked about the yellow chicken is that
even the breast part was moist and tender that it felt as if you were
eating the red meat part of the chicken and not the white meat.
Now for Pam's food choices..
Oatmeal Shrimp
Fresh,
and actually quite large Shrimp. The meat of the shrimp was really
fresh and sweet tasting which was complimented well with the subtle
sweet flavors given by the oatmeal.
Since we needed veggies, Pam paired the Oatmeal Shrimp with Stir Fried Kangkong.
This
was the most addicting stir fried kangkong I have ever had! Not only
was it exploding with garlic flavor, but the addition of blended
chillies gave it a really strong burst of flavor which didn't only add
heat, but actually brightened up the flavors of the veggie actually
making it taste less..umm..leafy (?!) A really good side-dish even for a
carnivorous eater like myself.
Sate Sampler!
The
highlight of this dish had to be the peanut dipping sauce! Beautiful
nutty texture, definitely a far cry from the typical dipping sauce made
with Skippy haha!
and for dessert.. Milo Dinosaur!
Okay..
Basically, a Milo Dinosaur is basically a cup of hot milo layered with
ice and then topped of with an extra spoonful (or two) of milo powder.
To some it may seem boring.. but for a kid who always loved milo and
would actually sneak eating milo powder by the spoonful while his mom
wasnt looking.. this was the most awesome thing ever invented!!
The
fun part about the Milo Dinosaur is actually when you finished sipping
the milo drink at the bottom and then using a spoon to scrape off the
dampened milo powder on the sides of the cup. My childhood in a cup!
Wipe out...
So
although the some may have mixed feelings towards Makansutra Gluttons
Bay, I definitely enjoyed our visit! The food was really good in my
opinion. Its like eating at home and then eating over at your friends
house. My mom's adobo would definitely taste different from the adobo
over at my friend's house, but that doesn't mean it doesn't taste good.
What's important is that the food stalls at Makansutra were still able
to capture the essence of Singaporean cuisine but executed into
something uniquely their own.
I guess that's it for now Singapore! See you again soon!
