Songkran

 In the mood for Thai!

A little background.. my friends Joe, Meg, Mon, and I all share the same passion for food. Our bond over food all started when all four of use would be on the same 9pm carpool trip from Ateneo to Alabang. Since we all had 6 to 9pm classes, we only got to eat dinner at around 9:30. So from drive-thru visits and take-outs, our trips started to become full on food adventures such as our visit to Subspace after a late night school activity.

Luckily, those food adventures continued long after graduation and we were now scheduled to give Songkran a try as suggested by Meg.

Songkran exudes a very relaxed atmosphere

 Catfish Salad

Crispy Catfish topped on a bed of chopped green mango and drizzled with tangy vinaigrette.
Always liked the combination of the crispy, and salty catfish against the sour green mango which Songkran did quite well.

 Tom Yum Kung

Traditional hot and sour soup with Prawns.
The clear broth was infused beautifully with lemongrass and had a really good, tangy and sour taste. I do prefer to add little bit more chilli to give it more of that throat-throbbing heat.

 Red Beef Curry

Really liked this dish because of the the nutty, sweet flavor of curry with just the right amount of heat that lingers in your mouth.

 Bagoong Rice

Although it may already be a meal in itself, I enjoyed pairing this with the red beef curry because the sweet, fresh flavors of the bagoong and the green mango helped balance out the heat of the curry.

Overall, Songkran really did a great job in capturing traditional, Thai flavors and finding the right balance of these very strong flavors and adapting it to the Filipino taste. Thai flavors can get exceptionally bold, with traditional curry dishes really packing the heat, making your head explode. So I actually admired how Songkran was able to find that balance so that dishes had the right amount of heat, right amount of sourness, and right amount of sweetness which makes it enjoyable for everyone.
