Revisiting School Food

A modern spin on Korean comfort food

One last food stop before heading over to Incheon as the Sisons'SeoulAdventure2013 comes to an end.

As we rushed around Myeongdong buying last minute knick knacks, I was starting to feel a little down seeing that the old building which used to house the biggest Zara store in Myeongdong was torn down as a new taller sky rise was being erected in its place.

As we walked away I saw a familiar sign by the finished wing of the building which said "School Food Blooming Mari". Immediately got excited because the last time I got to eat School Food was all the way in Lotte World. So now, one of my favourite restaurants in Seoul has now found a new home in my favourite place in Seoul!

Spam Mari

Although they may look like your typical kimbap, which some refer to as the Korean version of sushi; School Food opts to present them as mari which simply means rolls in Korean.

School Food's Spam Mari is basically a rice roll filled with spam, cheese, and radish which is then wrapped with thin, scrambled egg. I usually tell my friends that this favourite dish of mine is Korea's take on a breakfast kimbap, just like how the Mexican burrito also has its breakfast burrito counterpart.

Beef Risotto

A creamy risotto which has a cheesy surprise blended into the sauce. We were surprised when strings of cheese started to stretch out when we took our first bite. It looked like cheese strings stretching from that very first sliced pulled away from a pizza.

Although it may look Italian, the flavour of School Food's Beef Risotto was very much Korean. It had a subtle sweetness to the beef which resembles the flavours of bulgogi.

Carbonara Tteokbokki

Another Italian take on a Korean classic. School Food's Carbonara Tteokbokki did a 180 and really walked away from the lava like heat of traditional tteokbokki.

School Food's Carbonara Tteokbokki was like the nice and angelic long lost cousin of tteokbokki. Definitely a great alternative to enjoying rice cakes.

School Food's new branch in Myeongdong is surely in full bloom!

What's really good about School Food's take on modernizing traditional Korean comfort food is that despite the changes in flavour and recipes, the overall presentation and look of the food would still give you that comfort of enjoying your favourite Korean dishes (minus the heat of the tteokbokki haha!). Every time I visit school food, it feels as if my Korean friend came over and tried to make me my favourite Korean dishes with only the stuff that she can find in my fridge.

A perfect execution of modern Korean cuisine but still keeping the warmth of the home cooked meal.
